The journey to motherhood is beautiful. Expecting moms often radiate a special glow, filled with anticipation and love for the baby they’re about to meet. But once the baby arrives, many moms are surprised by how intense, and often isolating, the experience can be. That glow can quickly fade as the reality of life with a newborn sets in.
The “fourth trimester”—the 12 weeks following birth—is one of the most transformative yet challenging times in a woman’s life. In fact, 85% of moms experience distress.*
That statistic is heartbreaking, but not surprising. There’s a significant gap in care from the moment a mom gives birth to when she sees her provider for a 6-week checkup. And even then, those visits often don’t address the emotional, psychological, or day-to-day struggles new moms face. The baby is under the care of their pediatrician and it’s often beyond the scope of the OB to treat after that 6-week mark, leaving new moms confused on where to turn for their own support. It’s no wonder this time can feel overwhelming, scary, and lonely.
This is exactly where New Mom School steps in, like a warm ray of light, dedicated to helping moms keep that glow alive.
With a mom-first approach, we offer compassionate support, expert guidance, and research-based education designed to empower new moms. Our classes will help you better understand your newborn, navigate challenges with confidence, and truly enjoy the remarkable journey of early motherhood.
How It All Started
New Mom School was founded in California more than 10 years ago by Alexandra Spitz, a Certified Parent Educator, Infant Care Specialist, Happiest Baby Educator, Positive Discipline Parent Educator, and mom of two. The idea was born after Alex attended a Mommy and Me class with other new moms. That experience had such a profound impact on her life, she felt called to create something more.
Fueled by her passion for newborns, psychology, and the power of community, Alex created New Mom School: a supportive space where moms could come together and feel seen, heard, and empowered.
Now in St. Louis!
We’re thrilled to bring this amazing resource to St. Louis, thanks to Ali Kochtanek, owner of New Mom School St. Louis West County.
Ali is a proud mom to three—Olivia (9), Leo (7), and Kennedy (4)—and is a Certified Postpartum Doula and Pediatric Sleep Specialist. She brings a wealth of professional knowledge and a heart full of compassion to everything she does. Her mission? To help moms in our community feel supported, confident, and connected from day one.
“Our hospital systems and doctors are the best in the country – yet we lack the systems in place to adequately support moms after they have given birth. New Mom School aims to support our moms, but also our world class practitioners, by giving moms exactly what they need when going through their matrescence – a community of other moms going through the exact same thing, support from trusted experts in the field and the education to make parenting decisions with confidence. We’re giving moms a chance to experience what postpartum support should look like for all.” – Ali Kochtanek
Why New Mom School Matters
New moms need more than a checklist. They need a circle, a safe, welcoming space to share, learn, laugh, cry, and grow.
New Mom School is that space. A place for real talk, genuine connection, and expert support. We want every mom to know: you are not alone, and you are doing an incredible job.
Our classes are grouped by your baby’s birth date, so you’ll receive tailored education and support that aligns with your baby’s developmental stage, all while connecting you with moms who are right there with you. We even offer classes specifically for Second-Time Moms, who face a whole new set of joys and challenges.
Each class goes far beyond baby care. We focus on the whole mom—covering topics like self-care, mental health, sleep, feeding, relationships, and emotional wellness. We also offer a free weekly Breastfeeding Support Group, open to the entire St. Louis Community to utilize, to allow moms to start their feeding journeys on the best path possible.
