So here’s the behind the scenes for you, Mama. Breastfeeding can be as messy as it is gloriously satisfying and nourishing and fulfilling and challenging!  In those early days and weeks, while supply is still settling down, both you and your little one are getting used to each other and rhythms are beginning to form. It’s a beautiful, hot mess of leaking breasts, tears and joy. And it does not come easy to all moms. (In the US, 20% of moms stop breastfeeding by the first four weeks.)

If you’re about to embark on your breastfeeding journey, we’ve rounded up 5 breastfeeding essentials we think you’ll find helpful.

1. Nursing bra or tank top

Supermom T-Shirt Nursing & Hands Free Pumping Bra with Fixed Padding - Comfortable Maternity Breast Pump Bra

A well-fitting nursing bra or tank top is a game-changer. Unlike a regular bra, a nursing bra allows for discreet and comfortable feeding. It has flaps or panels that unclip easily, allowing you to feed quickly and conveniently without having to take the entire bra off. In addition, you can attach pump flanges and pull your shirt back down to pump hands-free. Look for bras made from soft, breathable material with good support. It’s a good idea to buy a few so you always have a clean one ready to go.

Maternity wear has come a long way, and you can now find stylish, comfortable options with a discreet pull-down feature for easy feeding. You’ll be especially grateful for this modesty when visitors come by, as you can remain social while feeling comfortable during feeding.

2. Nursing Pillow

In the first few months, a newborn can feed 8 to 12 times in a 24-hour period, with each session lasting anywhere from 20 to 45 minutes. That means you could be spending up to 8 hours a day nursing!

This is not just about comfort. By elevating your baby to the proper height, it helps you achieve a good latch more quickly, which can make feedings shorter and more effective. This proper positioning can also save you from a lot of back, neck, and arm pain that can come from hunching over or constantly readjusting your posture during those countless hours of nursing. Our favorite one can even be used while standing and walking!

3. Breast Pump

A manual breast pump is an essential and versatile tool for every new mom. It’s so small and portable that you can throw it in your purse and have it ready for any situation. It’s the Silicone Breastfeeding Manual pump (found on Amazon link). Unlike electric pumps, it’s completely silent and doesn’t require electricity, so you can discreetly use it anywhere—in the car, at a friend’s house, at work, or even on a bus—to relieve engorgement or collect a bottle of milk.

4. Water Bottle

Breastfeeding can make you feel incredibly thirsty. A good water bottle is essential for staying hydrated throughout the day and during nursing sessions. Keeping a large, easy-to-use bottle by your side ensures you can drink without interrupting a feed. It’s a simple item that makes a big difference in a breastfeeding parent’s comfort and well-being, helping to support milk production and overall health.

5. Breast Therapy Packs and Nipple cream

Therapy packs, breast ice packs and nipple creams provide therapeutic relief for common breastfeeding challenges. Cold therapy helps relieve pain associated with engorgement and swelling, while hot therapy encourages milk let-down and helps relieve plugged ducts & mastitis.  You’ve got to be kind to your breasts, they get a workout during the fourth trimester until things settle down and you get into your rhythm. Investing in a comfy nursing chair—like a glider or rocker with a footrest—is a great idea, as you’ll spend countless hours there. To make things easier, set up a nursing station by keeping all your essentials in a nearby basket, cabinet, or bag. This way, you won’t have to get up and down, and you can focus on feeding your baby.
